COVID-19 research is going on across the country right now, including in Westminster, where a group of undergraduate students are getting the opportunity of a lifetime.
"They are absolute rock stars, every one of them," said Dr. Dana Ferraris, associate professor of chemistry at McDaniel College.
Five undergrads at McDaniel College are working on research this summer to help develop drug to treat COVID-19. In the lab, they're making small molecules to inhibit a very critical protein in the coronavirus life cycle.
"By inhibiting this one protein, we're hoping to stop the viral life cycle and knock down the viral load and basically cure you," Ferraris said.
The students are juniors and seniors and mostly chemistry and biochemistry majors. They follow safety protocols by wearing masks and social distancing. It's practical hands-on experience they wouldn't be able to get otherwise.
