McFayden named as Teacher of the Year

Melissa "Missy" McFayden, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Ridgely Elementary School, was named Caroline County Public Schools Teacher of the Year on May 2, much to her surprise.  "I can't believe it!" McFayden said, minutes after the announcement was made in front of staff, students and parents gathered for Field Day. "I don't think I've wiped the smile off my face." McFayden is finishing her seventh year at the school. She was nominated for the first time last year.

RIDGELY Melissa "Missy" McFayden, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Ridgely Elementary School, was named Caroline County Public Schools Teacher of the Year on May 2, much to her surprise.

 

"I can't believe it!" McFayden said, minutes after the announcement was made in front of staff, students and parents gathered for Field Day. "I don't think I've wiped the smile off my face." McFayden is finishing her seventh year at the school. She was nominated for the first time last year.

 

McFayden said the nominee interviews were held on April 28, but she had no clue if she'd won until the announcement Friday morning.

 

"The county is just blessed with so many great teachers," McFayden said. "It will be an honor to represent the county at the state level."

McFayden, originally from Alabama, earned a bachelor's degree in international business from Auburn University and worked as a flight attendant for nine years, first based in New York and later in Washington, D.C. McFayden said she often visited a friend who lived in Maryland and met her husband here as well. McFayden decided to earn a master's degree in education at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore.
