McDaniel College President creates McDaniel Commitment for more meaningful experimental learning opportunities

A champion of both the liberal arts and McDaniel’s student-centered mission, McDaniel College President Julia Jasken saw a need to create more meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students. This is how the college’s signature McDaniel Commitment was born.

Jasken, who became the 10th president of McDaniel College on June 1, 2021, after serving in various administrative roles and as an English professor at the college, envisioned and designed the McDaniel Commitment during her tenure at McDaniel.

As a signature component of the McDaniel Plan, McDaniel’s customized, interdisciplinary curriculum, the McDaniel Commitment is made up of four elements embedded within the college’s general education curriculum and experienced by students at different stages of their development at the college—My Place, My Design, My Experience, and My Career. For instance, My Experience guarantees every student two experiential learning opportunities, such as service learning, study abroad, student-faculty collaborative research, credit-based internship, or independent study. Students also have access to a team of mentors who guide them on a completely tailored and personalized experience to prepare them for personal and professional success.

Her experience in developing and serving as the director of the Center for Experience & Opportunity (CEO), the college’s one-stop shop for experiential education and career development for McDaniel students and alumni, aided her in finding this educational pathway for students and alumni to intersect through the McDaniel Commitment.

Jasken, who has dedicated nearly her entire professional life to higher education and most notably to McDaniel, most recently served as the college’s executive vice president and provost. She began at McDaniel in 2003 as an English professor specializing in new media pedagogy and teaching a variety of professional writing courses.

“McDaniel is a special place and I know that when I look back on when I started here over 17 years ago, I am grateful for the opportunities that I have had to build new programs and develop partnerships with community members and am excited to expand upon this work in my new role,” Jasken said.
