MICUA’s 15 private, nonprofit colleges and universities serve almost 55,000 students annually and award 27% of all degrees conferred by a Maryland four-year institution.

The Independent College Fund of Maryland (I-Fund), a scholarship foundation managed by MICUA, has received a $33,000 grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in partnership with the UPS Foundation. Through the CIC/UPS Education Endowment, 12 students attending independent colleges and universities in Maryland who demonstrate financial need will receive scholarships of $2,750.

“One in four students attending a Maryland independent institution is eligible for a federal Pell grant,” said Tina Bjarekull, President of MICUA. “Without the generous support of foundations, such as the CIC/UPS program, these students would not have the opportunity to pursue their dreams."

The CIC/UPS Scholarship Program has made a private college education possible for more than 20,000 low-income and first-generation students and has had a transformative impact on individuals, families, and communities across the country.

“The Council of Independent Colleges is proud to support the Independent College Fund of Maryland, and its member colleges through the CIC/UPS Scholarships Grant Program,” said Richard Ekman, President of the CIC. “Designed to make private colleges more affordable and accessible, the scholarships will assist 551 low-income, first-generation, minority, and new American students nationwide.”

Nationally, CIC and the UPS Foundation provided more than $1.5 million in student scholarships through state-based associations to make private colleges and universities more affordable and accessible to underserved students.

Institutions in Maryland that received UPS Scholarships this year include Capitol Technology University, Goucher College, Hood College, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University Maryland, McDaniel College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, St. John’s College, Stevenson University, Washington Adventist University, and Washington College.

“The UPS Foundation is honored to work with CIC to provide scholarships for students at independent colleges and universities,” said Eduardo Martinez, President of the UPS Foundation and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at UPS. "Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community.”
