Stephan Jordan of Frederick was appointed Oct. 21 by Gov. Martin O'Malley to serve as the student representative on the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

As the appointee, he will act as the voice for all of Maryland's university and college students at the commission, Jordan said.

Jordan is an organized, conscious, smart and responsible person with good judgment, said Maria Hyson, executive secretary to the provost of Washington College in Chestertown, where Jordan is a federal work-study student.

"Stephan is ambitious, the other students respect him and enjoy his company," she said.

The college senior is the second of his schoolmates to receive the appointment in four years, which is a testament to his skills and character, said Joe Holt, chief of staff in the president's office at the college.

The appointment is normally rotated throughout the state's 68 colleges and universities. To have it come back to Washington so soon is extraordinary, he said.

"I think he had his head and shoulders above the competition," Holt said. "It speaks volumes to his nomination."
