MICUA Matters Fall 2007
On September 20, the MICUA Board of Trustees drafted a resolution encouraging Maryland’s political leaders to preserve critical State services and invest in the future health and prosperity of its citizens. The official statement was adopted after receiving briefings from key State officials on Maryland’s financial condition and the implications of a $1.7 billion budget deficit.
As evinced by recent history, State support for higher education is slashed during periods of fiscal constraint. Five years ago, Maryland cut State aid for public and private colleges and universities by more than $120 million. The higher education community has not recovered from these drastic measures and is concerned about the future strength and competitiveness of its institutions. The MICUA Board believes that the future health of a state is inextricably linked to the strength of its colleges and universities. Furthermore, the Board believes that there is a level of service that the public demands of its government and a level of service that is critical to a state’s quality of life and economic vitality.
The resolution states that “MICUA’s Board of Trustees recognizes that State revenue enhancements are necessary to avoid severe cuts that would cause significant harm to Maryland, its citizens, and the communities and neighborhoods surrounding our campuses. MICUA offers its support to Maryland’s leaders who make these difficult decisions.” The MICUA board resolution is attached. |
