MICUA Confers PresidentsÂ’ Award on Senator Kasemeyer

Kasemeyer was awarded the 2009 MICUA Presidents’ Award for his outstanding public service and strong leadership on behalf of higher education. The MICUA Presidents’ Award is an honor that has been bestowed sparingly to a few distinguished individuals who understand the broad public benefits of independent higher education and share a commitment to access, opportunity, and choice for all students. On September 18, Senator Kasemeyer was presented with the Presidents’ Award at an honors ceremony held at McDaniel College and attended by the presidents and top administrators of 15 independent colleges and universities. Mary Pat Seurkamp, President of College of Notre Dame of Maryland and Chair of the MICUA Board of Trustees, recognized Senator Kasemeyer as a “visionary leader” with the “intellect and passion” that make him well-suited for public service.

 

At that same ceremony, Senator Kasemeyer received a McDaniel College leadership award presented by President Joan Develin Coley and an alumnus recognition award presented by alumni Don Hobart and Corynne Courpas. President Coley described Senator Kasemeyer as a “monumental consensus builder and responsive communicator.” She thanked the Senator for 27 years of remarkable public service and a lifetime commitment to the ideals extolled by a liberal arts education.

Edward Kasemeyer and Dr. Joan Develin ColeyWhen accepting the awards, Senator Kasemeyer described McDaniel College as “the perfect place for a guy like me.” The Senator credits the College with teaching him the importance of working with others to solve problems and instilling him with a desire to serve the public. While in College, Senator Kasemeyer served as president of the student government association and president of his fraternity.

 

Senator Kasemeyer has served in the Maryland General Assembly since 1983, representing Baltimore and Howard counties. He currently serves as Majority Leader of the Maryland Senate and Vice Chair of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. Throughout his distinguished legislative career, Senator Kasemeyer has had a profound impact on public policies impacting higher education, healthcare, pensions, human services, and finance.
