The Board of Trustees of the Maryland Independent College and University Association elected Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., President of Loyola University Maryland, as Chair of the Board effective July 1, 2011. Elected by unanimous vote of the MICUA Board of Trustees—which includes the presidents of 16 private colleges and universities in Maryland—Fr. Linnane will lead the organization in implementing its strategic objectives.
At a recent meeting, the MICUA Board elected members to key positions for two-year terms. Other appointments include Vice Chair—Thomas Powell, President of Mount St. Mary’s University; Secretary/Treasurer—Weymouth Spence, President of Washington Adventist University; Member at Large—Roger Casey, President of McDaniel College; and Capital Projects Committee Chair—Ronald Volpe, President of Hood College.
The Maryland Independent College and University Association is a member-driven organization devoted to serving the interests of independent higher education and supporting the work of campus leaders throughout the State. Established in 1971, the Association provides services to foster cooperative efforts among its member institutions and all segments of higher education. As the voice of independent higher education in Maryland, MICUA seeks to inform the broader public about its member institutions and the vital importance of independent colleges and universities to the future of our State and nation.
The Rev. Brian Linnane, S.J., President of Loyola University Maryland, brings a wealth of experience as an educator deeply immersed in the Jesuit traditions of academic excellence and the promotion of faith and justice.
Born August, 25, 1955, Fr. Linnane entered the Society of Jesus in 1977 and was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood on June 14, 1986. He earned an A.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1977 and an M.A. from Georgetown University’s Department of Government in 1981 before undertaking divinity studies at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, where he received a master’s degree in 1986 and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1988. He earned master’s degrees from the Yale Department of Religious Studies in 1990 and 1991, and a Ph.D. in religious studies concentrating in religious ethics in 1994.
A native of Massachusetts, Fr. Linnane formerly served at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, as Assistant Dean and Associate Professor of Religious Studies. His scholarly publications are extensive, covering the disciplines of fundamental moral theology, health care ethics, and virtue ethics. He served as Assistant Dean at Holy Cross from 2003-05 and was named a Loyola Trustee in 2000. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the College of the Holy Cross, the Institute of Christian and Jewish Studies, and the Board of Directors of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. He is President of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, a member of the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, a representative to the American Council on Education Board of Directors for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Basilica of the Assumption Historic Trust Board. In July 2005, Fr. Linnane became the 24th President of Loyola University Maryland. |
