The Mount St. Mary’s University community will gather on Monday, October 23 to celebrate the inauguration of Timothy Trainor, Ph.D. as the 26th president of the university. The inauguration ceremony celebrates not only Retired Brigadier General Trainor’s formal installation as president, but also his leadership and accomplishments since joining the Mount in August 2016.

Trainor also is entering the quiet phase of a capital campaign, Forward! Together As One, and secured a $1 million donation to create the Palmieri Center for Entrepreneurship.
The university has introduced three academic programs (cybersecurity, politics/philosophy/economics and forensic accounting); signed articulation agreements in cybersecurity and biology with Frederick Community College; and marked the awarding of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grants to three recent graduates. New Division 1 athletic teams will begin competing in 2018, including men’s soccer, women’s bowling and men’s and women’s golf, and women’s rugby took the field this fall.
“The Mount is moving forward and I am excited by the opportunities and programs we are pursuing this year in academics, athletics, student life, campus ministry, the seminary and at our campus in Frederick,” said President Trainor. “Together we will succeed and advance this university into the future while respecting the foundation of faith and values upon which we rest.”Prior to the Mount, Trainor served as dean and chief academic officer at the U.S. Military Academy. He is the only retired general currently serving as president of a Carnegie-classified medium master’s college or university.
Mount St. Mary’s Board Chair Mary Kane, C’84 expressed enthusiasm about the Mount’s future under President Trainor’s leadership. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am thrilled to celebrate the formal installation of Dr. Timothy Trainor as president. Over the past year, Dr. Trainor has harnessed the energy of all of those who love the Mount to build remarkable forward momentum for the university. His leadership is focused on preparing our students to lead lives of significance. With Dr. Trainor as our President, we will implement our strategic plan to continue our long history of Mt. St. Mary's University educating ethical leaders to serve God and others."
“We’ve been lucky to have President Trainor on our campus for over a year, so we know that we’re getting a caring, organized, and thoughtful man in this important role,” stated Professor of Chemistry and Faculty Chair Patricia Kreke, Ph.D. “He spent a year getting to know our campus community, our traditions, what we hold important, and what we hope for in the future. I think I can speak for the faculty in saying that we welcome Dr. Trainor as our president and colleague, and we look forward to working with him for many years.”
The inauguration festivities, which highlight the university’s commitment to service and to living lives of significance, will kick off Saturday, October 21, with the Mount Celebration of Service in partnership with Special Olympics Maryland. Nearly 300 Mount St. Mary’s students will help ensure that the Special Olympics Fall Fest runs smoothly and that competitors have a memorable day. Special Olympians will compete in cycling, flag football, long-distance running, powerlifting and tennis. President Trainor will offer remarks at the opening ceremony.
On October 23, the day’s events begin with an inauguration mass at 10 a.m. at The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. The 2 p.m. inauguration ceremony at Knott Arena, PNC Sports Complex will be followed immediately by a reception. The event can be seen via livestream at https://livestream.com/msmu
