Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., president of Loyola University Maryland, sent the following message to Loyola students and employees on June 13, 2016:

Dear Members of the Loyola Community:

The mass shooting in Orlando this weekend is a horrific act of hate and terrorism, and we are called to respond with righteous anger, conviction, and courage.

As we reflect and respond, I am particularly concerned with assuring those in our community who are GLBTQ+ that we stand shoulder to shoulder with them in condemning this crime and advocating for justice. Just as the French said in January 2015 that we are all Charlie Hebdo, today we are all GLBTQ+. The attack on this community represents a grave assault on the genius, beauty, and freedom of our American society.

While I am traveling on a 10-day Ignatian pilgrimage through Spain and Italy, I am staying in close connection with our campus community. I want to assure all of you, and particularly those of you who are feeling targeted and vulnerable, that I am carrying your intentions—and those of the Orlando victims and their families—with me as I walk in the footsteps of St. Ignatius. “God's love,” St. Ignatius reminded us, “calls us to move beyond fear.”
