Students reading on Washington Adventist University campusColumbia Union College in Takoma Park received official approval from its four governing bodies, including the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the Board of Higher Education of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Adventist Accrediting Association, and the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools to officially become Washington Adventist University. The school began operating under the new status on July 1, 2009.

Washington Adventist University is the only university with a main campus located within Montgomery County. It has experienced an increased enrollment for the fall 2009 semester. The University offers bachelor and graduate degrees including acclaimed programs in nursing, music, and pre-professions through three schools: School of Arts and Social Sciences; School of Health Professions, Science and Wellness; and School of Graduate and Professional Studies.

“Transforming CUC into a university increases potential for academic and enrollment growth in both graduate and undergraduate programs, offers greater financial stability, increases attractiveness to international students, and highlights the impressive qualifications of the school’s faculty and administrators, many of whom already hold a doctorate or terminal degree,” said Weymouth Spence, President of Washington Adventist University.
