Campus Emergency Prep: The Mount and FEMA Team-up

MICUA Matters

Fall 2009

Mount St. Mary’s University hosted the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Multi-hazard Emergency Planning for Higher Education course July 28 through 30. FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute introduced the pilot program—which included classroom work and breakout sessions—for representatives from six participating colleges and universities: Frederick Community College, Gettysburg College, Howard University, Millersville University, Mount St. Mary’s University, and University of Maryland, College Park. The course was designed to provide teams from institutions of higher education with the tools necessary to plan and respond to a broad range of hazards and emergencies.

“The Mount works closely with FEMA to keep our campus on the forefront of safety issues that higher education institutions face in today’s world,” says the Mount’s Director of Public Safety, Barry Titler. “This opportunity will enhance the safety and response for all the schools participating.” Participants had the opportunity to offer comments and suggestions concerning the course. The Emergency Management Institute will take those suggestions and create a final program available to colleges and universities across the nation.
