Spring 2008

Founded in Emmitsburg in 1808, Mount St. Mary’s University celebrated the anniversary of the awarding of its original State charter February 27, 2008, with a reception following the unveiling of the historic timeline display on the third floor of the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis. The Maryland legislature granted the Mount its charter to operate as an institution of higher learning on February 27, 1830. Bicentennial medals were awarded to Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton, Senator David Brinkley, Delegate Bill Frank, and MICUA President Tina Bjarekull. The exhibit will be displayed through November and can be viewed whenever the Senate Building is open to the public.

Maryland Independent Higher Education Day

MICUA Matters

Spring 2008

On February 7, more than 150 college and university students and leaders traveled to Annapolis for Maryland Independent Higher Education Day. Each year, MICUA organizes a day of visits with legislators to thank them for their support of the Sellinger Program—the vehicle for providing support for independent institutions for 35 years—and to ask for their continued support. Students and school officials also expressed their appreciation for State funding of capital projects on campuses around the State.
