Maryland's independent colleges and universities receive less than 3% of  the State's higher education  appropriations, yet serve nearly 52,000 students (16% of the State's enrollment).

Maryland's independent colleges and universities receive 3% of State funding for higher education yet confer 24% of all degrees in the State, including:

  • 27% of all STEM degrees,
  • 36% of all teacher candidates,
  • 48% of all bachelors degrees in nursing, and
  • 42% of all graduate degrees.

 

 

 

 

 

 Taxpayer cost per degree is $30k less for MICUA institutions

Taxpayers benefit from the public/private partnership with Maryland's private colleges and universities. In fiscal 2007, the taxpayer cost per degree conferred was $6,000 compared to the public universities at $36,000.
